'Astonishing Criminality': South African Legal Expert Says US-Israel War on Iran Violated All International Norms

A professor of law and international relations at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa has described the "Ramadan War" against Iran as a completely illegal conflict, asserting that Tehran's defense aligns fully with international legal norms.

Hawzah News Agency- Dr. Manosi Manakub, a professor at the University of Johannesburg, made the remarks during an interfaith webinar analyzing the international legal dimensions of the war waged by the United States and Israel against Iran. He emphasized that Iran's self-defense was entirely lawful and legitimate under international legal standards.

Dr. Manakub highlighted the initiation and imposition of the war without regard for international covenants, conventions, and bodies as a primary example of its illegality. He expressed astonishment and regret that such a war could occur with such a blatant disregard for the rule of law.

The legal scholar also pointed to the attack on Iran's nuclear facilities as another unlawful dimension of the conflict. He noted that Iran was pursuing peaceful nuclear energy with no evidence of seeking nuclear weapons, yet was attacked and prevented from exercising its legal and conventional rights to atomic energy.

Dr. Manakub further cited the targeting of civilians and innocent individuals—specifically the attack on a girls' school that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Iranian children and adolescents—as a clear violation of international law. He stated that such actions stand in definitive opposition to all international norms and regulations. He characterized the deliberate strike on a school on the first day of the war as indicative of a criminal mindset on the part of the United States and Israel.

The professor added that the bullying behavior exhibited by the administration of US President Donald Trump is not limited to Iran, noting similar injustices and crimes witnessed in Venezuela, Cuba, and other nations.

Dr. Manakub framed the crimes committed against Iran as an extension of the crimes perpetrated against the oppressed people of Palestine and Gaza. He expressed regret that such atrocities have been occurring in various countries for years without sufficient opposition.

The University of Johannesburg professor praised Iran's efforts and struggle against global injustice and violations of international law, wishing the nation victory and success against its adversaries.

He further stated that Iran's courage and resistance against oppressors and bullies are commendable. From the perspective of international law, he affirmed, Iran's operations constitute legitimate and lawful defense in pursuit of the rights of its people and nation.

Dr. Manakub strongly condemned the attacks by the United States and Israel on civilian installations, energy infrastructure, hospitals, schools, and universities, citing them as further evidence of the unlawful actions carried out by Washington and Tel Aviv.
