Hawzah News Agency - Question: My elder brother commits major sins. He even dares to strike my father, who is an old man. We cannot understand how he has turned out this way, especially since we are a religious family and no one else among us behaves like him. [What should we do?]
Answer:
There are several reasons behind such behavior, the most important of which is negligence in this brother’s upbringing during childhood — not supervising him properly when he went out or when he began associating with bad friends.
Some families might be excused due to being preoccupied with the struggles of daily life, or because the parents have a low level of education and awareness, or even because of the absence of the head of the family — for example, if the father is imprisoned. The result of such circumstances is often a serious moral or behavioral deviation in one of the family members.
When this deviation becomes deeply rooted within a person, mere advice usually has little effect. In fact, one of the consequences of such deep corruption is that the individual becomes harsh and resistant toward anyone who tries to advise him.
Nevertheless, losing hope in reforming such a person is not permissible. You must continue advising him with gentleness and kindness. Try also to distance him from bad company by introducing him to righteous friends and engaging him in lawful, wholesome activities. The challenges involved in such efforts are far less than the difficulties that will arise if he is left alone to continue down the path of sin.
