Hawzah News Agency- Speaking during his weekly ethics lecture at the Imam Sadiq (AS) Institute in Qom, attended by seminary students and their families, the senior cleric stressed that true science is that which serves humanity and uplifts societies.
“Science that gives life to humanity, that helps and makes people’s lives easier, is valuable,” he said. “But science that leads to the production of nuclear weapons and mass murder is not worth it.”
Referring to the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (PBUT), Ayatollah Sobhani called on young scholars to recognize the moral responsibility that accompanies knowledge. He emphasized that progress in science must be accompanied by ethical guidance and compassion.
The cleric drew a parallel between the current global situation and Imam Ali (AS)’s description of the era of ignorance in Nahj al-Balagha:
“In ignorance, people feared one another inwardly and armed themselves outwardly.”
“Today, ignorance dominates the West,” Ayatollah Sobhani said. “Nations live in fear and arm themselves against one another. This arms race is not a sign of civilization or science—it is ignorance in a modern form.”
He also reminded students of the importance of self-improvement, quoting a hadith:
“Whoever makes no progress from one day to the next has wasted his life’s capital.”
Ayatollah Sobhani urged all believers—regardless of their status or position—to strive for daily growth, both in knowledge and in spirituality, saying that stagnation is worse than death for the seeker of truth.
