Hawzah News Agency- Ahmed Abu Hamra told Al-Masirah network that the freed prisoners, who spent between five and eight years behind bars, have been received with high morale after their release. Some had their detention extended beyond eight years by Saudi forces and their mercenaries despite previous understandings and agreements on the prisoners' file.
Abu Hamra explained that the release came during a large-scale operation carried out by Yemen's armed forces on the western coast, which led to major field developments and the liberation of several districts that had been under the control of the aggressors' mercenaries. During the operation, the armed forces were able to reach the prisons and cells where the prisoners were being held and bring them out.
He noted that the prisoners did not expect the armed forces to reach them in such a manner, especially after long years behind bars — turning the moment of release into a great surprise and long-awaited joy after years of suffering under harsh detention conditions.
The prisoners were subjected to torture, ill-treatment, and violations during their detention, Abu Hamra said, but this did not break their morale or resolve. After years of waiting, they left the prisons with high spirits and regained their freedom.
He recalled that the prisoners' file has been and remains a humanitarian issue that must be addressed away from political and military calculations, especially since previous agreements mediated by the United Nations stipulated measures for their release, with the process due to take place in July. However, the other side reneged on its commitments and failed to implement what had been agreed.
Abu Hamra said the release was achieved by the grace of God and through the efforts of the armed forces, after stalling and refusal to honor agreements prevented the prisoners from gaining their freedom through the agreed path. The armed forces were able to reach them at their detention sites and return them to their families after long years of captivity.
He added that the moment of reception reflected the magnitude of joy the freed prisoners experienced upon leaving the prisons, as they were welcomed at both official and popular levels amid widespread attention in appreciation of the years they spent in captivity and the suffering they endured during detention. The reception was worthy of their sacrifices, and the scenes of their return to freedom overshadowed the effects of the suffering they had endured, as they found themselves among their people and before their families and comrades instead of the cells where they had spent long years.
Abu Hamra stressed that the freed prisoners arrived with high morale despite the difficult conditions they had endured, and that the joy of freedom and the popular and official reception played a major role in overcoming much of the impact of their years of detention. What was achieved is the fruit of the prisoners' steadfastness on one hand and the efforts made to secure their release on the other.
He said the grand reception for the prisoners proved the Yemeni people's appreciation for their sacrifices and steadfastness. The years of captivity did not diminish their morale; rather, they returned to their homeland with strong will after long awaiting the moment of leaving prison and regaining their freedom.
