Conference

Organized by the Swiss Center for Islam & Society, the conference is to be held on September 13th 2022, 17:00 in French and German, Open to the general public.

Hawzah News Agency- Muslim chaplaincy in public institutions in Switzerland was born in response to a concrete need. On the one hand, it is situated at the threshold of religious practice and secular space. On the other hand, the established Christian chaplaincy is the context of its emergence, so that inter-religious collaboration plays an important role. In this context, Muslim chaplaincy has become more professional in recent years and assumes a central contextualising function for Islamic discursive traditions in Europe. The issue of health is proving to be a cross-cutting issue for Muslim chaplaincy as well, as it contributes to the spiritual dimension of health in different institutions such as hospitals, nursing homes, asylum centres and prisons. In hospitals in particular, chaplaincy is increasingly established as specialised spiritual care in an inter-professional context. This opens up new spaces for Muslim chaplaincy, but also requires a high capacity for dialogue with medicine and care. How does Muslim chaplaincy fit into the broader framework of interprofessional spiritual care? What is the content profile of Muslim chaplaincy and how does it relate to Christian chaplaincy? In what ways can Muslim chaplaincy be open to different audiences? How can Muslim chaplaincy be structured and practiced in an interfaith and secular framework?
