Iranian MP: NPT Withdrawal, Nuclear Policy Review Require Leader's Approval—Final Decision Must Serve National Interests

A member of the Iranian Parliament, criticizing the International Atomic Energy Agency's performance regarding attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities, said: The issue of withdrawing from the NPT and any review of the country's nuclear policy must be carried out with consideration of national interests, following the conclusion of the Supreme National Security Council and with the approval of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution.

Hawzah News Agency- Esmail Kowsari, a member of the Iranian Parliament, in an interview with Hawzah News Agency correspondent in Tehran, criticized the IAEA's performance regarding attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities and said: Lawmakers, considering the agency's performance and reports presented contrary to ground realities, have called for examining the issue of withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). However, the final decision in this regard must be made with consideration of the country's interests, within the framework of the Supreme National Security Council's decision, and with the approval of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution.

Referring to the US attack on Iran's nuclear facilities during the 12-day war, he stated: In the final days of the war, when the opposing side failed to achieve its objectives, it targeted Iran's nuclear facilities—an action that the IAEA was expected to condemn, but no such reaction was observed from the agency.

Kowsari, criticizing the double standards of international institutions toward major powers, added: We believe the agency must take a clear stance in accordance with international rules and regulations against attacks on countries' nuclear facilities. When such an action is carried out by the US and no effective response follows, the question arises as to what extent this institution is capable of fulfilling its responsibilities.

The parliamentarian, referring to the Zionist regime's non-membership in the NPT and claims about its possession of nuclear warheads, said: This situation shows that existing monitoring and enforcement mechanisms lack the necessary effectiveness in dealing with certain countries and cannot prevent their actions.

He also criticized the agency's reports on Iran's nuclear activities, stating: The Islamic Republic of Iran has acted within the framework of laws and regulations related to its nuclear activities, but the reports presented to the Board of Governors were inconsistent with existing observations and realities and paved the way for subsequent actions against Iran.

Kowsari, noting that a request by a number of lawmakers to examine withdrawal from the NPT has been submitted to the Parliament's Presiding Board, said: We must wait and see what decision the Presiding Board makes regarding raising this issue in Parliament.

He nevertheless emphasized: The people have raised their demands, and lawmakers are pursuing this request, but the final decision must be made by examining all dimensions of the issue, including the interests of the people, the country, the territory, and the system. We must be subject to the country's macro decisions and those of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, and act accordingly whenever the Supreme National Security Council reaches a conclusion and that decision is approved by the Leader.

Necessity of Examining All Dimensions of Nuclear Policy

In response to a question about the necessity of reviewing the country's nuclear policy and the various views raised in this regard, Kowsari said: The Islamic Republic of Iran's first priority must be benefiting from nuclear technology in areas such as agriculture, medicine, industry, and other sectors.

He added: Alongside this, the issue of deterrence must also be considered, and if expert reviews lead to a conclusion about the necessity of change in this area, all its advantages and disadvantages must be carefully examined.

The parliamentarian, emphasizing that an individual's personal opinion cannot be the basis for a final decision on such an important matter, stated: All aspects and consequences of a possible decision must be weighed, and a decision must be made after examining national interests and the conclusions of responsible institutions, so that everyone can support the final decision.

Change in Missile Range: Details Not Yet Announced

Kowsari, in response to a question about the possibility of changing restrictions on Iran's missile range following the Leader of the Islamic Revolution's emphasis on responding to any aggression without geographical limitations, said: The details of this matter have not yet been announced by officials, and no definitive comment can be made about it.

Referring to the experience of the eight-year war, the 12-day war, and recent conflicts, he added: The conditions and characteristics of these wars differed from one another, and the country's armed forces and scientists have gained valuable experience during these periods.

The parliamentarian, stating that the capabilities of Iranian youth and specialists in the missile field are significant, said: The country has made great progress in this area, and the results of these capabilities will become clear in practice. However, regarding a possible change in missile range restrictions, we must wait for details to be announced by officials.

US Threats: Part of Psychological Warfare

In another part of the interview, regarding Western media speculation about the possibility of a broader war against Iran, Kowsari stated: The bulk of this atmosphere-building should be assessed within the framework of psychological warfare and media operations by the US and its allies.

Referring to US military capability in recent wars, he said: The opposing side deployed a significant portion of its capability in past wars, and if it commits aggression again, it should know that it will face a heavier response than before.

The parliamentarian, stating that the US is facing the problems and consequences of recent wars, added: In my view, American officials and people, as well as regional countries, have criticisms regarding the consequences of these wars and the costs imposed on them. Therefore, starting another war could bring greater costs for the US.

Kowsari also raised the possibility of limited action in the region but said: Even in such conditions, the opposing side must consider the consequences of its action, because Iran's response could be far heavier than previous experiences.

Referring to the capabilities of Iran's armed forces and the experience gained in recent wars, he emphasized: Iran's armed forces and people have shown that they stand against aggression and will respond with power if it is repeated.

The parliamentarian concluded by referring to the people's continuous presence in various scenes, saying: The people's presence sends a clear message: that the Iranian nation stands by its country and its resistance and fears no threats.
