Nigeria welcomes Muharram with mourning ceremonies

As the first day of the holy month of Muharram, 1448 AH, dawned, Shia Muslims and followers of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, under the leadership of Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky, commenced extensive religious programs and mourning rituals for the days of Ashura across various cities of the country.

Hawzah News Agency- According to the official media outlet of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, cited by Hawzah News Agency's international desk, the ceremonies have featured mourning processions, flag-changing rituals, enlightening lectures, and ritualistic performances, all aimed at keeping alive the immortal uprising of Karbala and the tragic martyrdom of Imam Hussein (PBUH) and his loyal companions.

Based on reports received, details of the ceremonies held in various regions of Nigeria are as follows:

1. Maraba-Jos (Kaduna State)

In this area, Imam Hussein mourners first staged a street procession and mourning march along the main thoroughfares of the city. Subsequently, at the Fodiyya Educational Center, a spiritual ceremony was held during which the flag marking the birth of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), bearing the slogan "Labbayka Ya Rasul Allah," was lowered, and the flag of Imam Hussein mourning, emblazoned with the slogan "Labbayka Ya Hussein," was hoisted. Following this, Malam Abdullahi Umar, representative of the followers of Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky in the city, delivered an address elaborating on the necessity of love and obedience toward the Ahlul Bayt (PBUT) and the timeless lessons of Ghadir and Ashura.

2. Illela (Sokoto State)

The ceremonies welcoming Muharram in the city of Illela also commenced with the hoisting of the Ashura flag. During the proceedings, a ritualistic performance and a short passion play (reenactment) depicting the events of the early days of Muharram and the arrival of the Karbala caravan were staged. In the concluding segment, Malam Muhammad bin Ismail, representative of the followers of Sheikh Zakzaky in the city, delivered a speech on the historical events of the first day of Muharram, and the ceremony drew to a close with elegies and mourning by those in attendance.

3. Kazaure (Jigawa State)

In the city of Kazaure, faithful believers and Imam Hussein mourners likewise gathered at their places of worship to mark the first night of mourning for the year 1448 AH, initiating, as per annual tradition, ten nights of religious sermons and lamentation gatherings.

It is worth noting that, according to an announcement by the Media Forum of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, these programs — comprising explanatory lectures, knowledge circles, passion plays, and cultural and insight-building activities — will continue for ten nights across all Shia regions and circles of Nigeria.
