Man dies after killer stabs him in the neck outside Toronto mosque

Toronto Police identified the victim as Mohamed-Aslim Zafis, 58, who was pronounced dead after the stabbing at the International Muslims Organization mosque at Rexdale Blvd. and Bergamot Ave.doors ensuring that anyone entering was complying with COVID-19 health regulations.

Officers found Zafis on the ground in a pool of blood with a stab wound to his neck.

According to a police statement, the man was working as a volunteer caretaker at the mosque and had been in a chair outside the front doors ensuring that anyone entering was complying with COVID-19 health regulations.

An assailant approached Zafis and stabbed him once before running away. Police said the alleged killer has a slim build and was wearing a black hoodie and dark pants.

The National Council of Canadian Muslims (nccm) conveyed deep sadness and shock on social media, asking the community “not to speculate” as to motive while the police investigate the killing.

An updated tweet Sunday afternoon indicated the mosque doors were closed and would not open again until detectives complete their investigation.

In a separate stabbing, a victim was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening wounds shortly after midnight on Sunday.

The stabbing happened during an argument between two men in the area of Richmond and Brant Sts.

Police are asking for the public’s help in finding the alleged attacker, Cyrus Alaei, 22, of Toronto. He is wanted for aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and failure to comply with a release from custody order.
