Evil Speech: A Tool in the Hands of Satan

The Holy Quran places special emphasis on fostering connection and love among individuals. Therefore, it advises people to engage in actions that strengthen these bonds of affection.

Hawzah News Agency - The Almighty God states in the Holy Quran:

«وَقُولُوا لِلنَّاسِ حُسْنًا.» 1

"Speak kindly to people."

Explanation:
The Holy Quran places special emphasis on fostering connection and love among individuals. Therefore, it advises people to engage in actions that strengthen these bonds of affection. One such action is the use of kind words, which can plant the seeds of love in people's hearts and reinforce their relationships.

Conversely, vile and disgraceful speech can become a tool in the hands of Satan, sowing seeds of hatred and hypocrisy in hearts, transforming bonds of friendship and goodwill into enmity. As God mentions elsewhere in the Quran:

«وَقُلْ لِعِبادِي يَقُولُوا الَّتِي هِي أَحْسَنُ إِنَّ الشَّيْطانَ يَنْزَغُ بَيْنَهُمْ إِنَّ الشَّيْطانَ كانَ لِلْاءِنسانِ عَدُوّا مُبِينا.» 2

"Tell My servants to speak in a manner which is the best. Indeed Satan incites ill feeling between them, and Satan is indeed man’s manifest enemy."

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) expresses this matter as follows:

«سُوءُ اَلْمَنْطِقِ يُزْرِي بِالْقَدَرِ وَ يُفْسِدُ اَلْأُخُوَّةَ.» 3

"Bad speech tarnishes dignity and destroys brotherhood."

This means that if someone neglects to adhere to divine guidance, disregarding God's command regarding good character, Satan seizes this opportunity. Not only does he disgrace the person who speaks ill, but he also severs the ties of affection between that person and those around them.

Therefore, one must avoid anything that can be utilized as a tool by Satan and his agents.

Rational Justification for Good Speech and Avoidance of Disgraceful Words
If someone were to ask us, "When interacting with others, would you prefer to be addressed with beautiful words or with ugly and disgraceful language?" what would our answer be?

Certainly, no one is eager or pleased to be spoken to with rudeness or insolence. Thus, since we have such expectations for ourselves, why should we not extend the same consideration to others?

Imam al- Baqir (peace be upon him) also reminds us of this principle:

«قُولُوا لِلنَّاسِ أَحْسَنَ مَا تُحِبُّونَ أَنْ يُقَالَ فِيكُمْ.» 4

"Speak to people with the best words you wish to hear about yourself."
