Attack on Muslim woman and daughter at Reunion Tower investigated as possible hate crime

Police are investigating an alleged weekend attack on a Muslim woman and her daughter at Reunion Tower as a possible hate crime. / The woman replied, "Oh yeah, that's why you wear that dirt rag on your head."

Hawzah News Agency (Dallas, US) - After Renee Ayesh and daughter, Jenan Ayesh, both of Enid., Oklahoma, had visited the landmark as part of a family get-together in Dallas.

Ayesh, who is retired, said she and Jenan, both wearing hijabs, were in the vestibule of the tower waiting for her son-in-law to pick them up. She said she was standing just to the side of one of the double doors when a woman exiting the building told her to get out of the way.

"I wasn't blocking the door or anything," Ayesh said. "I said, 'OK, I'm sorry,' and I moved, but I said, 'There's another door you could have used.' And she said, 'I'll use whatever door I want.'"

As the clash escalated and moved outside, Ayesh said, Jenan, a respiratory therapist, told the woman that she didn't need to be so rude. The woman, she said, began cursing at them and saying, "Why are you here? Go back to your country."

The two told the woman they had both been born in the U.S. and were Americans, to which Renee Ayesh said the woman replied, "Oh yeah, that's why you wear that dirt rag on your head."
