Children With Cancer in Crosshairs: Legal Basij Slams US Attack on Ahvaz Hospital, Demands International Accountability

The Legal Basij Organization of Hamedan Province in Iran has issued a statement strongly condemning the American attack on Shahid Baghaei Hospital in Ahvaz.

Hawzah News Agency- the organization released its statement in response to the assault, which forced the temporary evacuation of the medical center and endangered the lives of patients, including children suffering from cancer.

The full text of the statement reads as follows:

In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Attacking medical centers and endangering the lives of patients, particularly children, constitutes one of the most flagrant violations of international humanitarian law and the fundamental principles of human rights. According to published reports, the strike on the vicinity of Ahvaz's Shahid Baghaei Hospital forced the medical facility to temporarily evacuate, placing patients—among them children battling cancer—in grave danger.

The Legal Basij Organization of Hamedan Province vehemently condemns this inhumane act, which stands in clear contravention of peremptory norms of international law. Under the Four Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their Additional Protocols, medical facilities, personnel, and patients enjoy special protection. Any attack on these premises, or any action that disrupts their security and function, can constitute a grave breach of international humanitarian law and, under appropriate circumstances, a war crime. The Spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran has also described this attack as a "war crime."

The legal community of the nation expects international bodies—including the United Nations, the Security Council, the Human Rights Council, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and other competent authorities—to react effectively, without discrimination or double standards. These bodies must condemn the perpetrators and pave the way for accountability and reparations for the damages inflicted.

The Legal Basij Organization of Hamedan Province, while declaring its solidarity with the resilient people of Khuzestan, the medical staff, the patients, and their families, stresses the necessity of pursuing this act through international legal channels. It calls upon all jurists, university professors, and legal institutions to utilize the capacities of international law to document, expose, and pursue the legal and international responsibility of the perpetrators of this act.
