Hawzah News Agency- Three senior members of various committees of the US House of Representatives on Friday stated that Donald Trump had failed to achieve his three main goals in the war against Iran and called for an immediate withdrawal from the war.
Gregory Meeks, a senior member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Adam Smith, a senior member of the Armed Services Committee, and Jim Hymes, a senior member of the Select Committee on Intelligence, reminded that the 60-day deadline had arrived and emphasized that, based on the provisions of the "War Powers Act", the president must withdraw American forces from the region.
This statement was issued after Donald Trump officially ignored the 60-day deadline to end the war against Iran without obtaining authorization from the US Congress.
Under a law called the War Powers Act, the US government must seek authorization from Congress to continue any military action beyond 60 days.
The three senior Democrats added: “This selective war has not achieved any of the administration’s stated goals: ending Iran’s nuclear ambitions, removing highly enriched uranium from Iran, or bringing about regime change''.
“Instead, Iran today has more leverage, a younger leader, and instead of reaching a better deal, this administration cannot even open the Strait of Hormuz, which was open before this war began''.
The rest of the statement is devoted to the heavy economic costs of the war to Americans. “By all accounts, Trump’s handling of the war has been a failure'', they wrote.
The US lawmakers added: “This war has cost American taxpayers tens of billions of dollars and has raised the price of fuel and food''.
The three Democratic representatives concluded the joint statement by saying: “Republicans who have been hiding behind the 60-day deadline to avoid voting on this war no longer have an excuse. Congress must vote to end this war''.
