Hawzah News Agency- According to Iraqi media outlets, including Al-Sumaria News, Safaa Al-Mashhadani, a member of the Baghdad Provincial Council and candidate of the Sovereignty Coalition, was killed early Wednesday when an explosive device planted in his vehicle detonated in the Al-Tarmiyyah district, north of Baghdad.
His office confirmed the attack in a video statement, accusing unnamed political movements of orchestrating the assassination. The office manager, Mustafa Al-Hayali, said the bombing was a “well-planned operation” aimed not only at eliminating Al-Mashhadani but also at portraying the area as insecure.
The killing marks the first politically motivated assassination tied to Iraq’s electoral process in more than ten years, raising fears of renewed violence and instability ahead of the polls.
Observers warn that the incident could deepen tensions among rival blocs and push Iraq’s fragile political scene into what some describe as a “bloody phase” of competition.
