Bahrain's Al-Wefaq Condemns Kuwait Death Sentence Against Sheikh al-Ma'touq, Urges Government to Back Down

Bahrain's Islamic National Accord Society (Al-Wefaq) has condemned a death sentence issued by Kuwaiti courts against Ayatollah Sheikh Hussein al-Ma'touq and two others, calling it a verdict devoid of justice and fairness and warning that the move is a "dangerous escalation" threatening social stability and coexistence in Kuwait.

Hawzah News Agency- In a statement, Al-Wefaq said the ruling was issued by a court lacking the principles of justice and fairness, describing it as a dangerous escalation with deep political and social consequences that target citizens' freedoms, religious privacy, and religious rites—as well as targeting academic and religious figures.

The society noted that Sheikh al-Ma'touq is a well-known Islamic and national figure in the Persian Gulf region, known for his peaceful approach and positions aimed at preserving national interests and stability. The statement stressed that he has never sought confrontation or destabilized security, but has been targeted with "deceptive accusations."

Al-Wefaq linked the escalation of security measures in Kuwait to similar measures in Bahrain, saying the region's political, security, and military conditions are being exploited to settle political scores with domestic opponents through media attacks, distortion of facts, and character assassination campaigns.

The society called on Kuwaiti authorities to back down from the death sentence, halt security campaigns against Shia citizens, and restore order to political life by restoring the credibility of constitutional institutions. Al-Wefaq also warned of the consequences of entrenching authoritarianism and foreign interference in undermining national unity and stability.

In conclusion, Al-Wefaq stressed that national and Islamic figures, including Sheikh al-Ma'touq, are "guarantors of societies against sedition and internal conflicts." It called on authorities to benefit from these leaders' national role instead of besieging and targeting them.
