Pope Leo XIV expressed particular concern regarding the humanitarian situation in the city of Taiz, in southwestern Yemen, noting that its residents are suffering from a lack of food, water, and healthcare services. According to reports, the intensification of the conflict and a growing fuel shortage in Taiz threaten water supply systems supported by UNICEF, which serve approximately 3 million Yemenis, including nearly 1.6 million children.
Elsewhere in his remarks, the 71-year-old Pope noted that wars, beyond spreading death and destruction, leave the world impoverished and wounded. "Never before has it been as clear as it is today," he said, "that wars beyond sowing death and destruction impoverish and damage the world." He also prayed for the victims of Friday’s terrorist attack on worshippers at St. George’s Orthodox Church in Jordan, and expressed his sympathy to the families of the victims and those injured.
