Iranian Senior Cleric Slams Azerbaijan's Hijab Ban as "Gross Injustice," Urges Baku to Wake Up

Qom — A senior Iranian cleric has called on Azerbaijani officials to "wake up" and halt what he described as a gross injustice against hijab-wearing women in the country, condemning Baku's moves to ban headscarves in schools and enforce mandatory unveiling.

Hawzah News Agency- Ayatollah Shab-Zendeh Dar, secretary of the Supreme Council of the Islamic Seminaries, made the remarks at the start of his advanced jurisprudence class at the Grand Mosque in Qom, reacting to the Azerbaijani government's decision to bar veiled girls from schools and its campaign to remove headscarves from women.

"I hope Azerbaijani officials will wake up and abandon this gross injustice they have committed against hijab-wearing women in that country," the cleric said.

He further criticized certain Muslim countries that have followed the lead of non-believers and hostile parties by restricting the hijab, even for elementary and high school students. "It is truly regrettable how they trample divine rulings such as the issue of hijab, which is addressed in the Quran, and deprive those who wish to obey God Almighty of an education," he said.

The secretary of the Supreme Council of the Islamic Seminaries noted that experience has shown that immodesty and nudity corrupt society and the youth and block the path to advancement and progress.

Ayatollah Shab-Zendeh Dar continued: "Countries that paid no heed to these matters are now mired in terrible depths," citing the Quranic verse: "And whoever turns away from My remembrance — indeed, he will have a depressed life" (Ta-Ha, 124).

"We hope that Azerbaijani officials will also wake up and abandon this gross injustice they have committed against hijab-wearing women in that country," he concluded.
