Hawzah News Agency- Mohammed Aref al-Shabaki, a member of Iraq’s Nineveh Provincial Council, emphasized in remarks that calls to restrict weapons to state control must be accompanied by strengthening the defensive capabilities of the Iraqi Army and the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF).
He stressed that supporting the military institution and the PMF is the only way to guarantee the protection of Iraq’s borders and airspace against any external threat.
Al-Shabaki said: The current stage requires a balanced plan that establishes equilibrium between enforcing the rule of law and strengthening the security system.
He believes: The Iraqi Army and the Popular Mobilization Forces are the solid wall in protecting Iraq’s security and national sovereignty.
The Nineveh Provincial Council member added: The Popular Mobilization Forces have always been and remain the main pillar and fundamental cornerstone in defending the Iraqi nation, and played a decisive role in liberating most of the provinces that terrorism had defiled, especially Nineveh Province.
He also noted: The resistance groups and security forces have made great sacrifices to confront the Daesh (ISIS) terrorist group and restore stability to the country.
Al-Shabaki Warns: Weakening the PMF Would Create a Security Vacuum
Al-Shabaki warned that any attempt to weaken or marginalize the Popular Mobilization Forces under the pretext of restricting weapons would create a dangerous security vacuum that terrorist groups could exploit.
He added: The experience of the past years has proven that the PMF is not merely a military force, but a popular institution rooted in Iraqi society that has stood alongside the army and security forces in the most difficult circumstances.
Calls for National Consensus on Defensive Institutions
The Nineveh Provincial Council member called for national consensus on supporting Iraq’s defensive institutions, emphasizing that political differences must not come at the expense of the country’s security and sovereignty.
Al-Shabaki stated: Iraq today needs unity and solidarity more than ever, and the army and the PMF must remain above political disputes.
PMF’s Role in Liberating Nineveh
Referring to the PMF’s role in liberating Nineveh Province from Daesh, al-Shabaki said: The sacrifices made by the PMF fighters in liberating Mosul and other areas of Nineveh will never be forgotten by the Iraqi people.
He emphasized: The blood of the martyrs of the PMF and the Iraqi Army has watered the tree of Iraq’s freedom and territorial integrity, and this must be preserved.
Al-Shabaki concluded: Protecting Iraq’s borders, airspace, and national sovereignty requires a strong and united defensive system in which the army and the Popular Mobilization Forces work side by side, and any plan to restrict weapons must take this reality into account.
