PMF Is a Pillar of Iraq's Security, Not a Target for Dissolution: Nineveh Official

Nineveh — A member of the Nineveh Provincial Council from the Christian minority has stressed that restricting weapons to state control does not mean dissolving the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), describing the group as a main pillar of security in the region.

Hawzah News Agency- In an exclusive interview with Al-Ahed news website, Rabee Souran said the stability of Nineveh province depends on high-level coordination between the PMF and security forces under the command of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

Souran said: "We certainly agree with restricting weapons to state control and placing all forces under the command of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, but this absolutely does not mean dissolving the Popular Mobilization Forces or giving terrorist plans another opportunity — the same plans that tried to dominate the region during the events of 2014."

He added that the PMF has proven its high effectiveness in battles and in liberating areas alongside the heroes of the Iraqi army and security agencies at all levels, and today forms an official military force within the ranks of the armed forces.

The provincial council member pointed to public satisfaction among the people of Nineveh — particularly in areas belonging to the original components of Christians, Shabaks, Kakais, and Yazidis, in addition to Arabs of all backgrounds — as a result of the tangible and major security stability.
