Hawzah News Agency- Minister of Religion Nasaruddin Umar said the conference was part of strengthening the international network of the Istiqlal Mosque as well as Indonesian religious diplomacy.
"On September 25-28 this month, we will hold an international conference attended by approximately 400 world grand imams, and invite Grand Sheikh Al-Azhar and Sheikh Imam As-Sudais," Nasaruddin said at the Istiqlal Mosque, Jakarta, Tuesday, September 8.
According to Nasaruddin, the international network of Istiqlal was also strengthened through the position of the Grand Imam of the Istiqlal Mosque as President of the International Grand Imam Association or International Grand Imam Association.
In addition to IGIC, Istiqlal routinely holds an Ambassador Gathering which brings together about 40 ambassadors of friendly countries. The forum is used to discuss various issues related to religious diplomacy.
"We regularly invite about 40 ambassadors of friendly countries to discuss religious diplomacy," he said.
Nasaruddin said Istiqlal's position as the National Mosque made it often one of the destinations for foreign delegations and heads of state when they were in Indonesia.
He also said that Istiqlal has an international corner that works with a number of countries. Through this facility, visitors can access journals from universities in various countries through an integrated digital library and computer.
IGIC 2026 will last for four days involving grand imams from various countries. The forum is aimed at strengthening the inter-religious network as well as discussing the role of religion in international relations.
