“Justice is something worth fighting for,” he said, emphasizing the universal values embodied in Imam Hussain’s (peace be upon him) sacrifice.
Following the ceremony, the mayor shared a photo from the event on social media, reiterating his respect for the occasion and the principles it represents.
Community leaders welcomed Mamdani’s participation, describing it as a meaningful gesture of solidarity with New York’s diverse Muslim communities and a reflection of the city’s commitment to religious and cultural inclusion.
Ashura commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala. Observed annually by millions around the world, it serves as a reminder of the values of sacrifice, justice, and steadfastness in the face of oppression.
