Hawzah News Agency- Addressing a mourning gathering at the Hussainiya in Jaunpur, India, Hojatoleslam Sayyid Safdar Hussain Zaidi described mourning as a symbol of truth-seeking, justice, and resistance against oppression, stressing that the eternal message of Karbala continues to inspire unity, awakening, and support for the oppressed across the globe.
Mourning: A Medium for Awakening and Uprising Against Tyranny
"The event of Karbala is not merely a historical occurrence," Zaidi stated, "but a universal school for defending truth, righteousness, and confronting falsehood—a school that has shaken the foundations of oppressive regimes in every era."
The religious scholar asserted that the power of truth can never be defeated. "History bears witness that the name of Yazid has remained shrouded in darkness and hatred, while the blessed name of Imam Hussain (PBUH) endures eternally in human hearts as the symbol of justice, humanity, and freedom," he said. Zaidi further noted that the Ashura uprising has served as an inspiration for all free people of the world, with various nations—including the people of Persia—drawing lessons in resistance and standing firm against oppression from this school.
Turning to the significance of mourning rituals, Zaidi stated: "Beyond their spiritual, religious, and moral benefits, mourning gatherings play a vital role in strengthening social cohesion, mutual empathy, and bonds among people. When human beings come together around the message of truth, the spirit of brotherhood, sacrifice, and support for the oppressed is reinforced within society."
The Indian orator added: "Mourning assemblies, processions, and commemorative ceremonies held irrespective of religious and ethnic differences convey to society that the ideal community is one in which the poor and the rich stand side by side in support of the oppressed, united and resolute against the oppressor."
Addressing contemporary global conditions, he stressed: "In an age when certain media outlets, through disinformation campaigns, seek to conceal the truth, mourning centers can serve as a wholesome and effective medium, conveying the message of truth and awareness to the people and paving the way for the awakening of public consciousness."
Hojatoleslam Zaidi concluded: "The month of Muharram teaches humanity that steadfastness upon the truth is the real key to victory. Any society that places honesty and truth-seeking at the core of its identity will never surrender to oppressive powers. Mourning is, in essence, the annual renewal of this very spirit of truth-seeking and struggle against tyranny, so that the human conscience remains ever awake and aware."
