Hawzah News Agency- The Mubahala, the solemn mutual cursing between Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the Christian delegation from Najran, stands as one of the most shocking, decisive, and awe-inspiring events in the entire history of Islam, a prominent Iranian scholar has declared.
Hojatoleslam Seyyed Mojtaba Badri, Imam of the Grand Mosque of Ahbab al-Hussein (AS) in Tehran, stated in an interview that this event is the greatest testament to the superiority and divine right of the Shia school of thought across the ages.
According to Badri, the Christian enclave of Najran—a wealthy region of 70 villages on the border of Hijaz and Yemen—received a letter from the Holy Prophet (PBUH) inviting them to the truth of Islam. After initial debates in Medina, the arrogant Christian leadership, refusing to accept logical reasoning, dared to request the Mubahala.

What happened next, the cleric emphasized, is nothing short of miraculous. When the appointed day arrived, the Christian archbishop witnessed the luminous, heavenly countenances of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Imam Ali (AS), Lady Fatima (AS), Imam Hassan (AS), and Imam Hussain (AS)—the people of the cloak.
"The archbishop of Najran confessed immediately, saying: 'I see faces that if they were to raise their hands to God and pray, even the mightiest mountains would be uprooted. Their prayers are instantly answered,'" Badri recounted.
Terrified by the divine light emanating from the Ahlul Bayt (PBUT), the Christian delegation backed down, agreeing to pay the Jizya (tributary tax) instead of facing divine damnation.
A LIVING MIRACLE FOR ALL MUSLIMS
Citing the grand exegete Allameh Tabatabai, Badri noted that the Mubahala is not merely a past event but a "remaining miracle" of Islam. Any faithful Muslim seeking to prove a divine truth can invoke this tradition as a powerful weapon against falsehood.
"The descent of the Mubahala verse (Holy Quran 3:61) is a thunderous proof of the doctrine of Wilayat and Imamate," Badri asserted. "If the Muslim world accepts the authority of Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali (PBUH), for today’s world, we will propagate pure Islam globally."
A CRITICAL TOOL AGAINST MODERN DEVIATIONS
The scholar warned that understanding this event is vital for countering contemporary sectarian deviations.
"If we truly believe that Imam Ali (PBUH) is the 'Self' (Nafs) of the Prophet (PBUH)—as stated in the Quran—no one can claim superiority over him. Propagating the truth of Mubahala will block the spread of deviant movements like Wahhabism and Baha'ism," he concluded.
The cleric urged all religious preachers to highlight this historic event as the ultimate evidence of the righteousness of the Prophet’s holy household.
