Hawzah News Agency - Question: A lot of young people struggle with idleness and having too much downtime, which is often the root cause of bad habits (corruption), depression (melancholy), and extreme boredom. How can we break out of this dead end?

Answer:

First off, part of this issue is tied to the overall economic situation of our countries, and obviously, that is out of our hands. But the rest of it comes down to youth culture and our own mindsets. Here is what we advise to get out of this rut:

  1. Master your willpower: Everything can be conquered by human willpower, as long as you know how to apply it.
  2. Make your own moves: Young people need to hustle and create their own work opportunities, to the fullest extent that the law allows. This means you actually need to be acquainted with the law so you can operate smartly within it.
  3. Stop slacking: You have to actively reject laziness, sleeping in too much, and just living based on your passing desires.
  4. Understand the trap of doing nothing: Recognize the real dangers of idleness and too much leisure time. Having nothing to do brings out negative traits (meanness), pulls you into unlawful or haram things, and ultimately sets you up for failure in life.
  5. Step up: Realize that life is all about responsibility. First, you have to take responsibility for yourself, and then you need to step up for your close relatives.
  6. Drop the ego: Stay humble and do not look down on or refuse a halal, lawful job just because you use the excuse that it’s too “ordinary” or beneath your status/rank. A lot of wealthy people started out totally broke at the beginning of their lives, and many presidents and top leaders began in very simple, humble conditions.
  7. Think outside the box: Creativity is a core quality of successful people. Youth should try to innovate and create jobs or paths that will help them prosper and live well.
  8. Build a winning routine: Thinking deeply, reading, staying active, keeping a joyful spirit, optimism, contentment, making dua (supplication), and praying are the main qualities that set you up for real work opportunities. By doing these things, your free time will be filled productively, and your idleness will be cured.
