The Only Two Acceptable Types of Envy

Hadith of the Day is a daily feature highlighting timeless sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and the Ahlul-Bayt (pbut), offering insights into faith, ethics, and spirituality for contemporary life.

Hawzah News Agency- Al-Khalil ibn Ahmad narrated from Abu Ja’far Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Daybuli who narrated from Abu Abd Allah, who narrated from Sufyan, from al-Zuhri, from Salim, from his father that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh and his family) said:

There is no [justifiable] envy except in two cases: a person to whom Allah has given wealth, and he spends from it [in charity] during the hours of the night and day; and a person to whom Allah has given the Quran, and he devotes himself to it [by reciting it and acting upon it] during the hours of the night and day.

Commentary: Envy (here) means coveting a blessing that someone else enjoys. The meaning of this Hadith is that, other than these two blessings, there is nothing else truly worthy of such deep attachment and longing.
