Hawzah News Agency- Ahmad ibn Harun al-Fami (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from Muhammad ibn Ja’far ibn Buttah, known as Mil, who narrated from Ahmad ibn Abi Abd Allah al-Barqi, from his father, by his chain of narrators tracing it back to Imam Ali (pbuh) that he said:
Two men in the world have broken my back:
1. A man with a learned tongue who is a sinner, and
2. A man with an ignorant heart who is a devout worshiper.
This [first] one averts [attention] from his sinfulness with his tongue, and this [second] one averts [attention] from his ignorance with his devotion. So beware of the sinful among the scholars and the ignorant among the worshipers, for they are the trial of everyone who is tested.
For indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) say: ‘O Ali, the destruction of my nation is at the hands of every hypocrite with a learned tongue.’
