Najaf Seminary Marks Millennium with Landmark Conference on Sheikh Tusi’s Global Intellectual Legacy

The holy city of Najaf is set to host the first major academic event marking the millennium of the Najaf Seminary, as leading scholars and researchers gather for a two-day international conference dedicated to the scientific legacy of Sheikh Tusi, one of the most influential figures in Islamic intellectual history.

Hawzah News Agency- According to organizers, the conference, titled “The Scholarly Legacy of Sheikh Tusi in Islamic and Western Thought: Contemporary Reflections and Approaches,” will be held on February 11–12, 2026, under the auspices of the Holy Shrine of Hazrat Abbas (peace be upon him).

The event is being organized as the inaugural scholarly gathering within a broader series of programs planned to commemorate one thousand years of academic, religious, and civilizational activity by the Najaf Seminary, one of the most prominent centers of Islamic learning in the world.

Held under the slogan “The Seminary of Najaf… A Thousand Years of Sacrifice and Service,” the conference aims to reassess the historical and intellectual role of Sheikh Tusi in shaping Islamic thought, while also examining his influence on contemporary scholarship in both the Muslim world and the West.

Organizers say the conference seeks to revive and critically re-explore the scholarly heritage of the Najaf Seminary by focusing on Sheikh Tusi’s foundational contributions to jurisprudence (fiqh), principles of jurisprudence (usul al-fiqh), theology (kalam), and comparative studies.

Academic elites from seminaries and universities are expected to present specialized papers analyzing Sheikh Tusi’s methodologies and his enduring impact on the structure of Islamic knowledge, as well as his relevance to modern intellectual debates and cross-civilizational studies.

The conference will also explore how Sheikh Tusi’s works helped establish Najaf as a central hub of Islamic scholarship and how his legacy continues to shape contemporary religious and academic discourse beyond the Islamic world.

Organizers emphasized that this event marks only the beginning of a comprehensive academic and cultural program planned over the coming years to commemorate the millennium of the Najaf Seminary, highlighting its pivotal role in preserving Islamic scholarship, promoting intellectual independence, and contributing to global thought.

Najaf’s millennium celebrations are expected to draw sustained international attention to the city’s historical position as a beacon of religious learning and its continuing influence in shaping Islamic intellectual traditions.
