Commemoration Ceremony Held for Fourth Anniversary of Grand Ayatollah Safi Golpayegani

A ceremony marking the fourth anniversary of the passing of Grand Ayatollah Lotfollah Safi Golpayegani was held in the holy city of Qom, attended by senior scholars, seminary professors, students, and large numbers of faithful citizens.

Hawzah News Agency- The commemorative event coincided with the eve of the martyrdom anniversary of Imam al-Hadi (peace be upon him) and took place on Tuesday evening at the Imam Hassan Askari (peace be upon him) Mosque in Qom. Prominent cleric Hojatoleslam Hossein Ansarian delivered a keynote address, while eulogies were recited by renowned mourners of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them).

A number of members of the Assembly of Experts, representatives of the Qom Seminary Teachers’ Association, and envoys from the offices of leading religious authorities were also present at the ceremony, underscoring the late scholar’s enduring influence within Iran’s religious establishment.

Grand Ayatollah Safi Golpaygani was among the most distinguished Shiite authorities of his generation. He studied under eminent figures such as Grand Ayatollah Hossein Boroujerdi, Imam Khomeini, and Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Reza Golpaygani. Alongside his scholarly pursuits, he played an active role in Iran’s post-revolutionary political structure, serving as a member of the Assembly of Experts for the Constitution and later as a member of the Guardian Council.

A prolific author, Grand Ayatollah Safi Golpaygani published more than one hundred works in Persian, Arabic, and English, covering theology, jurisprudence, Shiite doctrine, and Mahdism. Several of his works received national recognition, including the Book of the Year Award and the Book of the Year Award for Mahdism. Among his most notable writings is Muntakhab al-Athar, a comprehensive work on Imam Mahdi (peace be upon him), which he authored at the recommendation of his mentor, Grand Ayatollah Boroujerdi.

Grand Ayatollah Safi Golpaygani passed away on February 1, 2022 at the age of 102 in Qom. In accordance with his will, he was laid to rest at the shrine of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) in Karbala, Iraq.

His legacy as a steadfast scholar, prolific writer, and defender of Shiite teachings continues to resonate across seminaries and religious institutions in Iran and beyond.
