Hawzah News Agency- UN Secretary-General António Guterres denounced the operation, stressing that the compound is UN property and protected under international law. “I strongly condemn today’s unauthorized entry into the United Nations Sheikh Jarrah compound held by UNRWA… It is immune from any other form of interference,” he said, noting that such actions violate the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations.
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini described the raid as a direct affront to international law.
Lazzarini said the incident followed months of intensified pressure on UNRWA, including arson attacks, disinformation campaigns, and new anti-UNRWA legislation passed by the Israeli Knesset.
The raid came just two days after the UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly—151 in favor, 10 against, and 14 abstentions—to renew UNRWA’s mandate for another three years.
Israel has barred UNRWA from operating in the occupied territories, accusing some staff members of involvement in the October 2023 al-Aqsa Storm operation. Despite repeated UNRWA requests for evidence, Israel has provided none.
The agency continues to face severe financial strain as a result of Israel’s defamation campaign.
