Karbala Hosts Major Scholarly Gathering Honoring Ayatollah Milani’s Enduring Intellectual Legacy

The Holy Shrine of Hazrat Abbas (PBUH) in Karbala has hosted the Sixth Scientific Pre-Session of the International Congress Commemorating Ayatollah Sayyid Muhammad Hadi Milani, one of the most prominent Shia religious authorities of the 20th century.

Hawzah News Agency- The event was organized in cooperation with the Al-Abbas and Razavi holy shrines and attended by senior scholars from the seminaries of Najaf and Karbala.

The session opened with a welcoming address by Hojatoleslam Seyyed Abdul-Hakim Safi, representing the Holy Shrine of Hazrat Abbas (PBUH), who highlighted the significance of honoring great scholarly figures whose contributions have shaped contemporary Islamic thought.

Dr. Faramarz Qaramaleki, head of the Islamic Research Foundation of Astan Quds Razavi, then delivered a detailed report on the ongoing research efforts, publications, and academic programs undertaken as part of the larger congress dedicated to Ayatollah Milani. He noted that the initiative aims to document and revive the scholarly heritage of the late scholar, whose jurisprudential and theological works continue to influence seminaries across the Muslim world.

Scholarly presentations on Ayatollah Milani’s intellectual legacy

The session featured several academic papers reflecting on the methodological and jurisprudential approaches of Ayatollah Milani.

Hojatoleslam Muhammad Hassan Rabbani Birjandi, a prominent professor at the Khorasan Seminary, presented two research papers focused on Ayatollah Milani’s scientific methodology, examining his analytical approach to fiqh, principles of jurisprudence, and intellectual independence in religious reasoning.

Hojatoleslam Nizar al-Sonbol, a noted Iraqi scholar, presented a paper titled “The Theory of Right and Judgment in the Thought of Ayatollah Milani.” His analysis explored the Scholar’s distinctive perspective on justice, authority, and the relationship between individual rights and Islamic legal structures.

Exchange of scholarly views

Dozens of scholars from the Najaf and Karbala seminaries took part in a rich discussion following the presentations. Participants exchanged perspectives on Ayatollah Milani’s personal qualities—his humility, scholarly discipline, and commitment to Islamic unity—as well as the challenges and opportunities of organizing an international congress that properly reflects his intellectual stature.

The attendees emphasized the need for greater dissemination of Ayatollah Milani’s works, increased academic collaboration, and further documentation of his role in shaping the religious, social, and cultural movements of his era.

A step toward the main international congress

The Sixth Scientific Pre-Session marks another key step in the buildup to the main international congress, which will bring together scholars from Iran, Iraq, and other countries for a comprehensive review of Ayatollah Milani’s legacy. Organizers say the upcoming congress will highlight his contributions in jurisprudence, theology, philosophy, and Islamic ethics, while preserving his heritage for future generations.
