Ayatollah Sobhani: Mirza Naeini’s Innovative Ijtihad a Model for Seminary Scholars

Grand Ayatollah Jafar Sobhani has described the late Ayatollah Mirza Mohammad Hossein Naeini as a symbol of innovative jurisprudence and intellectual struggle, calling his scientific and spiritual legacy a model for today’s seminarians and researchers.

Hawzah News Agency- Speaking at the International Congress commemorating Mirza Naeini, held at the Imam Kazim (AS) Seminary in Qom, Ayatollah Sobhani highlighted Mirza Naeini’s pioneering methods in jurisprudence, such as his distinction between real and external cases, and his integration of reason and spirituality in Islamic scholarship.

The senior scholar emphasized that Najaf Seminary, which marks its millennium this year, has played a vital role in nurturing great jurists, noting that Mirza Naeini’s contributions were central to the seminary’s scientific and cultural development. He also traced the evolution of Najaf as a major intellectual hub since the migration of Sheikh Tusi, whose efforts to preserve Islamic knowledge laid the foundation for a thousand years of scholarly continuity.

Ayatollah Sobhani described Mirza Naeini as a “political jurist and rational thinker in times of crisis,” whose approach linked freedom and rationality within the framework of faith. He stressed that honoring such figures is both an act of worship and an affirmation of Islamic identity, urging seminaries to study and emulate Naeini’s intellectual courage and commitment to truth.

He further noted that Mirza Naeini’s profound works in jurisprudence, theology, and hadith studies continue to inspire the academic and spiritual life of seminaries. “The path forward for the seminaries,” Ayatollah Sobhani said, “is to continue the legacy of the Naeinis — scholars who combined ijtihad, insight, and struggle.”
