Qom Draped in Black as 28th of Safar Mourning Ceremonies Begin

QOM – With the arrival of the 28th of Safar, marking the passing of the Prophet of Islam (PBUH) and the martyrdom anniversaries of Imam Hassan Mujtaba (AS) and Imam Ali ibn Musa al-Ridha (AS), the holy city of Qom has been immersed in mourning.

Hawzah News Agency- From the early hours of the day, mourning groups and religious processions from across the city marched toward the holy shrine of Hazrat Masoumeh (AS), mosques, and other sacred sites. Black flags, banners, and mourning cloths adorned streets, shrines, and public spaces, as residents of Qom dressed in black took part in ceremonies of grief and remembrance.

On Thursday evening, a central mourning gathering was held at the Holy Shrine of Hazrat Masoumeh (AS) with a speech by Hojatoleslam Mir Baqeri. This morning, thousands of mourners joined rituals that included Quran recitation, elegies, chest-beating, and the collective recitation of the Ziyarat of the Prophet (PBUH).

Religious centers, mosques, and the homes of prominent clerics, which had been hosting mourning gatherings since the beginning of Muharram and Safar, witnessed an especially sorrowful atmosphere on this day. The office of the Supreme Leader in Qom also held special programs, draped in black and welcoming mourners.

The Jamkaran Mosque and other religious sites in the city became focal points for pilgrims and residents alike, with prayer stations distributing tea, water, and food to the participants.

These widespread ceremonies once again reflected the enduring devotion of the people of Qom and its province to the Prophet (PBUH) and the noble Ahlul Bayt (AS).
