Though participating in such wagers is not per se impermissible, it is best to avoid them. In point of Islamic law, the winners in such wagers do not ipso facto acquire ownership over the prizes they receive, unless the original owner of the prize (that is, the entity offering the prize to the winner) transfers it to the ownership of the winner via a canonically sanctioned transaction, such as in the form of a gift (hibah) or a consensual agreement (ṣulḥ).
