National Quran Competition Planned in Ghana

A national competition on Quran memorization and recitation will be organized in Ghana in the holy month of Ramadan.

Hawzah News Agency (Accra, Ghana) - Nur-ol-Haq Yahuza, a memorizer of the entire Quran from the African country, said that the competition has been planned for children under the age of 10, teenagers from 11 to 15 and youths aged 16 to 20.

Accra, the capital of Ghana, will host the national Quranic event.

The Quranic Society of Ghana invited the people of the country to sponsor the competition.

Yahuza said since Ghana was a British colony from the 1870s until 1957 when it got independence, the economic condition of many Ghanaian Muslims has not improved, and so Islamic and Quranic activities need to be financially supported in the region.

Islam is one of the major religions practiced widely in Ghana. Its presence in modern-day Ghana dates back to the 10th century to coincide with the demise of the Ghana Empire.

The population of Muslims in Ghana is about 24 percent.
