Canadian Islamic society invites people to Community Get-Together

Canadian city Muslims invited citizens to an interfaith gathering before new year, hoping to have a conversation and build bridges. One of the participants said:"We'd like to become more involved and have the community come together."

Hawzah News Agency (British Columbia, Canada) - Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows residents are invited to a Community Get Together with the Islamic Society of Ridge Meadows this week, between Christmas and new year's.

Everyone's invited to the community dinner this Thursday, Dec. 29, says Ahmed Yousef, with the society. "It will be a nice, social gathering," he said.

The idea is for people from all backgrounds to have a meal together and get to know each other. The event will include children's activities.

"There will be activities for the ladies, adults, youths, and young ones, as well."

The event takes place at Thomas Haney secondary school gym starting at 6 p.m. Everyone's invited to bring a potluck contribution to share with others.

"We're just getting together for a dinner, that's all, no strings attached."

Yousef said it's not a religious event, just a way of reaching out to the larger community.

The society may make such dinners regular events to continue its outreach.

"We'd like to become more involved and have the community come together."

He said currently there are about 150 people who follow Islam in the area. He expects a good mix of Iranian, Malaysian, Syrian, Bangaladeshi, Pakistanis and Filipinos to show up. Yousef is from Egypt.
