‘Meet a Muslim’ In Marshall university

The Muslim Student Association played Islam-themed Jeopardy during its ‘Meet a Muslim’ event to kick off Islam Awareness Week at the Memorial Student Center.

Hawzah News Agency-Marshall’s Muslim Student Association in Huntington, West Virginia, US organized “Meet a Muslim” Monday as a part of Islam Awareness Week.

The MSA set up a table outside the Memorial Student Center in an attempt to talk to the Marshall community. The table was set with Jeopardy consisting of questions related to Islam.

Sophomore biology major Deena Dahshan was one of the students working at the table for “Meet a Muslim” and she said Jeopardy was a good way to show people how much they knew about Islam.

“We wanted people to be able to question how much they know about Islam,” Dahshan said. “Because there are some questions on prophets in Islam and people are really surprised that we share the same prophets as other Abrahamic faiths.”

Islam Awareness Week takes place once a semester. The MSA scheduled the majority of events at the MSC, where everyone on campus can have access to attend.

Freshman communications disorders major Sana Ghori said she hopes to become more part of the community through these events.

“We want to encourage people to ask question about Islam and we want to diminish stereotypes by making ourselves known in the community,” Ghori said.

“Meet a Muslim” was not the only event that occurred Monday for Islamic Awareness Week. A game night with pizza was offered at the INTO building from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The rest of the week offers opportunities for the Marshall community to take part in. This includes “Politics and Popcorn” Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the MSC, where Dahshan said she wants to give people a chance to talk about politics and religion in a friendly atmosphere.

Wednesday is “Herd in Hijab” at the MSC from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., where people will have the opportunity to be taught how to properly wear a hijab. A bake sale will take place Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3p.m. with an Interfaith Dialogue from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., both at the MSC.

Friday, an Open House at the Islamic Center of Huntington will take place from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30
