Hawzah News Agency-Grand Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi has issued a ruling regarding the amount of Zakāt Al-fitr and the prescribed amount for compensation of the missed fasts in the month of Ramadan.

Grand Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi has issued his ruling regarding the amount of Zakāt Al-fitr. Based on the ruling no. 1692 in the practical treatise of Islamic laws by Grand Ayatollah Makārem Shirazī, paying Zakāt Al-fitr is obligatory upon all mature, mentally sane, and financially capable individuals, and it needs to be paid the day before the Eid Al-fitr before sunset. This means that the provider of a family must give out as Zakāt a Sā’ [almost three kilograms] of their staple food for himself as well as his family members and those whom he provides for. The staple food of people varies in different regions, but whether it is wheat bread, dates, rice, or corn, one needs to give a Sā’ of it out as Zakāt Al-fitr to the poor. Moreover, it is enough if one calculates the price of Zakāt Al-fitr and pays its equal price to the poor.

Furthermore, according to the Fatwa of Grand Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi, the guests, who are invited to another person’s house for break-fast on the day before Eid Al-fitr, must pay their own Zakāt Al-fitr and their host has no responsibility in this regard.

According to the Fatwa of Grand Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi, the amount of this year’s Zakāt Al-fitr for those whose staple food is wheat bread [and who live in Tehran] is 7000 Tomans, and in other regions within country is 6000 Tomans [for each person]. For those whose staple food is rice, the amount of Zakāt Al-fitr will be 15000 Tomans each.
The amount for compensation of an unintentionally missed fast is 2000 Tomans which has to be paid to buy bread [for the poor], and the amount for compensation of a deliberately missed fast is 120.000 Tomans.

According to the representatives of his eminence, the amount of this year's Zakāt Al-fitr in other countries is as follows:
Austria:   7 EUR
Tanzania:   TZS 7,200.00
New Zealand:  $7.50 nzd
South Africa:   R45.00

End.
