Visit a mosque day takes place in Birmingham this weekend

Mosques across Birmingham and the Black Country are inviting people to call in this weekend as part of a special open day.

Hawzah News Agency (Birmingham, UK) –   Visit My Mosque day, which is this year on Sunday, March 3, is a national initiative by the Muslim Council of Britain.

More than 250 mosques across the UK will be taking part to build bridges with local communities.

They include 11 mosques in Birmingham and a further seven in the Black Country.

Among them is Green Lane Masjid and Community Centre (GLMCC) in the Small Heath area of Birmingham.

GLMCC general manager Kamran Hussain said: "Our mosque is taking part in the national #VisitMyMosque initiative and in the spirit of friendship and conversation we hope to give members of the local community an engaging insight into the life of the mosque and help to promote greater understanding."

The programme for the day at Green Lane is: Arrivals 2.30pm, food and refreshments 2.40pm, tour of exhibition 2.50pm, watch the congregational prayer 3.30pm, presentation of the masjid's activities 3.40pm and tour of building 4.15pm.

Visit My Mosque was first conceived in February 2015 with about 20 mosques taking part in that first year.

Due to popular demand the initiative has grown to well over 200 mosques now taking part, with the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition and the Mayor of London all visiting their local mosques in 2018.

A Visit My Mosque spokesman said: "Many mosques organise open days regularly throughout the year and also have events where people of other faiths and none are welcome to attend.

"Further to this, interfaith work is very important and many Muslim communities are very active in interfaith work, making regularly make visits to their local churches and synagogues and other places of worship, forming relationships with their congregations and maintaining those relationships throughout the year through regular events.

End.
