At the beginning of this book, the writer says: Although evolution and progress seem an obvious matter, you may be surprised that there have been learned men who have doubted whether what has happened can be called progress or evolution.

One may wonder that there should be any room for doubt in this matter. But the reason why they have expressed doubt about it will be discussed later on.
