White New York man facing hate crime charges

Jeffrey Calhoun, 62, was arrested at the scene of the altercation near the intersection of Colvin and St. Lawrence Avenues, in Buffalo.

Hawzah News Agency (New York, US) - Calls to issue a New York man with hate crime charges are gathering pace after he was caught on video restraining and physically attacking a Muslim woman, before pulling a gun on a crowd of bystanders following a traffic collision.

Jeffrey Calhoun, 62, was arrested at the scene of the altercation near the intersection of Colvin and St. Lawrence Avenues, in Buffalo, on Tuesday morning.

The incident was sparked after Jeanneie Muhammad, an African-American woman, accidentally rear-ended Calhoun’s truck at a stop sign, having just dropped her children off at school.

Reaching into the glove box compartment to grab her insurance information, Muhammad said she was startled to look up to see Calhoun standing at her window, who then reached his hand into the car and snatched her keys from the ignition.

‘I think you’re gonna run’, Calhoun allegedly told her, prompting Muhammad to get out from the car.

At which point, Muhammad said the 62-year-old white male grabbed her by the back of her hooded sweatshirt and pulled her to the ground.

In a struggle on the ground, she says Calhoun made repeated attempted to wrestle her purse from her hands.

Overhearing the commotion, near-by resident Precious Santiago started recording the interaction on her phone from the balcony of her second-floor apartment across the street.

Just moments later a police patrol car arrives on the scene, and Calhoun frees his grip on Muhammad’s bag and walks towards the officers with his hands in the air and his gun holstered.

But despite Calhoun being placed in handcuffs shortly afterwards, Muhammad says the abuse didn’t stop there.

‘So we’re going back [and forth] like this the police officer said, “Ma’am you can’t have this exchange.” And he walked me down the street.’
