Mosque in Gloucester burgled so many times that they no longer bother reporting it to the police

The secretary of the mosque speculated that the charity box thief must have 'hidden somewhere and got to the box when the place was shut' after the late night Ramadan service.

Hawzah News Agency (Gloucester, UK) – A mosque in Tredworth has had its donation box stolen, as leaders there claim burglaries have happened so many times now that they no longer bother reporting it to the police.

The Masjid E Umar mosque was burgled during the early hours of Saturday May 11, between 5am and 9am.

It is currently the Islamic festival of Ramadan and members of Gloucester's Muslim community were at the mosque for prayers all through the night up until 4.15am.

After the congregation had left, the donations box which was set in to the wall of the prayer room was forced out and stolen. It has been speculated that there could have been over £600 contained within the box.

It is not the first time it has happened and Secretary of the mosque Jay Bdim said that reporting it to the police previously was fruitless, so this time they haven't bothered.

He said: "It is a waste of time to report to the police.

"Nothing happens. It just creates paperwork. They give us a crime number and that's that."

He speculated: "They must have hidden somewhere and got to the box when the place was shut.

"In order to get to the prayer room, one has to go through three sets of doors.

"The thief exited, I think, through the window."

The money in the charity box would have gone towards the upkeep of the mosque.

End.
