Muslim group files discrimination complaint after man says he was kicked off Greyhound bus for speaking Arabic

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has filed a discrimination complaint with the state of Michigan after a man says he was kicked off of a Greyhound bus for speaking Arabic.

Hawzah News Agency - The Michigan chapter of the Muslim advocacy group announced in a press release Wednesday that it filed the complaint with the state’s Department of Civil Rights on behalf of Abrahaim Mohamed, an American Muslim man.

The complaint alleges that Mohamed was not permitted to complete his trip from Michigan to Ohio after the Greyhound bus driver said she “did not like the way he was speaking on his phone.”

Mohamed told CAIR that other passengers on the bus were using their phones, but that he was the only one speaking Arabic.

CAIR-Michigan said that Greyhound has not responded to several outreach attempts. Greyhound declined to comment on the complaint to WXYZ in Detroit, citing the “sensitivity of the issue.”

“Companies like Greyhound that provide a service open to the public have a duty to ensure that all of their customers are safe from racism and anti-Muslim bigotry at the hands of their employees,” said CAIR-Michigan staff attorney Amy Doukoure.

“American Muslims should feel free to go about their day-to-day lives without having to worry that they will be discriminated against simply for speaking to their loved ones in a language other than English,” Doukoure added.

CAIR has reported several incidents in recent years of Muslims being removed from flights for speaking Arabic.
