Palestinian merchant who built ۴ Mosques in Romania

Muhammad Ayash is a Palestinian businessman living in Romania.

Hawzah News Agency (Bucharest, Romania) - Over the past years, he has built four mosques in the Eastern European country.

He said the mosques are gifts from Palestine.

Ayash said he sought to promote moderate Islam in Romania.

Three of the mosques are in Black Sea coastal areas where a large number of Muslims live.

The fourth is in Bucharest, the capital, and is frequented by ambassadors of Arab and Muslim countries, students, tourists and others.

Romania is a country located at the crossroads of Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe. It borders the Black Sea to south-east, Bulgaria to the south, Ukraine to the north, Hungary to the west, Serbia to south-west, and Moldova to the east.

Islam in Romania is followed by some 100,000 people, making up less than one percent of the population, but has 700 years of tradition in Northern Dobruja, a region on the Black Sea coast which was part of the Ottoman Empire for almost five centuries (ca. 1420-1878).

In present-day Romania, most adherents to Islam belong to the Tatar and Turkish ethnic communities.
