'Culture of racism' at Cardiff University slammed by Muslim student

A former vice president of Cardiff University Students' Union has said there is a culture of racism at the university. Amr, who was the union's vice president for welfare and campaigns in the last academic year, believes he was harassed online because of his Muslim Arab background.

Hawzah News Agency (Cardiff, Wales) - Students who complained about a 'racist' medical school play are unsupported three years on, it's been claimed.

A former vice president of Cardiff University Students' Union has said there is a culture of racism at the university, claiming he was targeted during an election campaign.

Amr Alwishah says he was wrongly labelled as homophobic, anti-Semitic, a liar and accused of using 'dirty tactics' in his campaign to be president of the students' union in February this year.

Amr, who was the union's vice president for welfare and campaigns in the last academic year, believes he was harassed online because of his Muslim Arab background.

He also alleges he was discriminated against by some university staff, and the university has previously "ignored" the abuse he's received online.

It comes after a group of BME students wrote to the chairman of the university council expressing concern about the handling of complaints about a medical school play in 2016, in which students 'blacked up' to portray a black member of the academic staff in "a hypersexualised and derogatory way".
