Leicester mosque crash: Man arrested over 'hit-and-run'

A man has been arrested after a suspected hit-and-run near a mosque, which left another man seriously hurt.

Hawzah News Agency (Leicester, UK) – A pedestrian in his 40s was struck in Humberstone Road after leaving the Masjid At-Taqwa mosque in Leicester at about 01:00 BST on Thursday.

The mosque said he had been hit by a car after leaving Taraweeh - prayers made during the month of Ramadan.

A 23-year-old man was held on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Leicestershire Police said the injured man was in a stable condition in hospital while a teenage boy, who was also struck, sustained minor injuries.

Officers do not believe the vehicle was "deliberately driven at the pedestrians" but failed to stop after the crash.

Detectives said they were trying to trace a blue three-door hatchback.

Insp Paul Allen said the car "may have sustained damage in the collision and could have been abandoned".

In a statement on Facebook, the mosque urged people to pray for the injured man to have "a full and speedy recovery, and to grant his family plentiful patience to get through this very difficult time".

End.
