Popular Malaysian drama director converts to Islam

A popular Malaysia TV drama director has revealed that he converted to Islam a year ago, saying he does not want people to be confused when they see him entering the mosque to perform prayers.

Hawzah News Agency (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) -  Michael Ang said on Instagram: "Alhamdulillah, I’ve been a Muslim for more than a year now and I’m now ready to tell Malaysians about this."

Ang, whose full name is Ang Hai Swee added: "I’m a new kid on the block, so please correct me when I’m wrong. Pray that I change for the better, and I apologize for keeping it a secret. I felt that it was a matter between God and I, and my loved ones."

The popular director also added a link to a YouTube video in which he spoke about his conversion to Islam.

Ang said that he was still learning about his newfound faith from religious teachers and had begun attending Friday prayers.

The Malaysian constitution grants freedom of religion and makes the country an officially secular state while establishing Islam as the "religion of the Federation".

According to the 2010 Census figures of the National Population and Housing, approximately 61.3% of the country’s population practice Islam.
