EU urges cessation of hostilities in Gaza

The EU spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy on Sunday called for the cessation of hostilities between the Zionist regime of Israel and Palestinian resistance groups.

Hawzah News Agency (Occupied Palestine) -According to the Palestinian Ma'an News Agency, Maja Kocijančič expressed hope that Israel will comply with the principles of necessity and proportionality in using weapons.

The term necessity is used in International Humanitarian Law (IHL). It is a fundamental principle when assessing the restriction of fundamental rights, such as using military force against individuals or inflicting destructions in conflicts.

Proportionality, on the other hand, is a general principle of EU law. It restricts authorities in the exercise of their powers by requiring them to strike a balance between the means used and the intended aim.

Kocijančič emphasized the need to examine the conflict in Gaza and the delivery of justice to those who have committed crimes.

She also said the political solution is the only way to prevent violence.

The European Union endorses the efforts of the international community and the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Process to put an end to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Kocijančič said.

Since the beginning of the March of Return, conflict between Hamas and the Zionist regime has escalated in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Two-hundred and two Palestinians have thus far been killed and over 22,000 others wounded.

The March of Return is a series of protests held by Palestinians which have been held every Friday since March 30, 2018. The protesters demand that Palestinian refugees and their descendants be allowed to return to their mother land, a land they have been displaced from.

The Gaza Strip and the Occupied Territories have been the scene of mounting tension since the president of the United States Donald Trump announced on December 6, 2017 Washington’s recognition of al-Quds (Jerusalem) as Israel’s capital and promised the US would move its diplomatic mission to the city.
