Hundreds take part in Newport's ۳۶th Ashura march to commemorate martyr Imam Hussain

A PEACEFUL march to commemorate the martyrdom of a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad took place earlier.

Hawzah News Agency (Wales, UK) – Hundreds gathered for the 36th Ashura march, which led them from the Islamic Society of Wales Mosque, on Hill Street, down Commercial Street, and back up Stow Hill, before returning to the Mosque.

The march commemorates Imam Hussain, who stood against Yazid, a tyrant leader who was usurping the rights of Iraqi citizens thousands of years ago.

Hussain fought, and died, along with 72 companions and family members, in a fight against 30,000 soldiers, in the Battle of Karbala.

Hussain lost his life for refusing to bow down to tyranny, and is known for saying: “Death with dignity is greater than life with humiliation.”

The procession, which included men, women, children, and even a decorated horse, saw members of the Islamic community carrying banners, chanting and singing, with some beating their chest in remembrance and respect.

Leaflets were given out to observers, which explained: “Today Muslims pledge loyalty to Hussain, by promising that they will never forget his legacy - to always stand up against oppression, and to sacrifice what we have in order to uphold justice, peace, and freedom for all.”

Observers were also given free drinks, including bottles of water and Fruit Shoots.

This annual event is celebrated by millions of Muslims worldwide, with Newport being the first European city to host the event.

Newport’s Ashura march has taken place each year for 36 years, and is organized by Islamic Society Wales.
