fghanistan confirms death of Pakistani Taliban Chief

President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani confirmed the death of Pakistani Taliban leader Mullah Fazlullah, hailing it a "great step toward building trust" between Kabul and Islamabad.

Hawzah News Agency (Kabul, Afghanistan) - Ghani announced in a tweet on Friday that he has spoken with Pakistan's caretaker Prime Minister Nasirul Mulk and Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa "and confirmed the death of Mullaah Fazlullah."

"His death is the result of tireless human intel led by Afghan security agencies," the Afghan president said.

His statement came after a senior Afghan Defense Ministry official and Pakistani intelligence sources said Fazlullah had been killed in a US drone strike in Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan.

The president said he urged the Pakistani leaders to take practical steps for bringing the Afghan Taliban to the negotiating table.

Afghanistan’s Pajhwok news quoted Ghani as saying that the Pakistani prime minister and the army chief have congratulated him on the success of the ceasefire and called it a great achievement that both sides observed the ceasefire with full compliance.

Mullah Fazlullah, believed to have been operating from hideouts in the forests of eastern Afghanistan, has been at the top of Pakistan's most wanted list and has been falsely reported killed on numerous occasions.

Fazlullah became the leader of TTP in November 2013 following the death of Hakimullah Mehsud, who was killed in a US drone attack in North Waziristan.

Fazlullah had been described as a "ruthless fighter" who was vehemently anti-state and against peace talks.

End.
