 First propagator of Shia Islam in Thailand honoured

A ceremony was held in Ayutthaya Rajabhat University in Thailand to commemorate Sheikh Ahmad Qomi, a 16th century Iranian Shia cleric who spread Shia Islam in Southeast Asia.

Hawzah News Agency (Bangkok, Thailand) - According to the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization (ICRO), the Sheikh Ahmad Qomi Foundation organized the event, which was attended by Iranian Ambassador to Thailand Mohsen Mohammadi, Iranian Cultural Attaché Mohammad Reza Zeinali and a number of Thai officials and academic figures.

 

A number of lectures were delivered at the ceremony in which the speakers elaborated on the life of the cleric and his role in spreading Shia Islam in the region.

 

The participants also laid wreaths of flowers on the tomb of Sheikh Ahamd Qomi.

Born in Iran's holy city of Qom in 1543 AD, Sheikh Ahamd Qomi is believed to have been the first individual propagating Shia Islam in Thailand.

 

The tomb of the cleric is in Ayutthaya Rajabhat University.
