The inherent threats of social networks are known to public, since they promote atheism and adhere to no specific cultural protocols or religious beliefs. Social networks’ destructive consequences are evident almost everywhere, in every country, city or village.

Hawzah News Agency (Qom, Iran) - Facebook is currently considered as the most popular social network in the world with more than 1 billion 400 million users worldwide and it is founded and headquartered in the U.S.; the other prominent social networks are Tencet QQ with more than 1 billion active users in China, whatsapp, an American social app, with 700 million users, qzone with 1 billion Chinese users, Google+ which is also another American social network with more than 1 billion users as well as viber with 200 million active users. These online networking websites and applications have together established a cyber-world in the heart of our real world. They are racing to attract more users worldwide and to develop their coverage.

The factors which are effective in boosting this rapid growth of modern social networks compared to their previous generations are counted as, access to a large international audience, fostering interactive communications among millions of users and absence of any local, religious or cultural restrictions on the user experience.

The large number of users, the huge amount of information, the fast information flow worldwide despite the countries’ boundaries, languages or … account as reasons for the growing popularity of such social networks. In fact, more than 70 % of youth aged 18-29 use social networks regularly.

The inherent threats of such networks are known to public, since they promote atheism and adhere to no specific cultural protocols or beliefs. Social networks’ destructive consequences are evident almost everywhere, in every country, city or village.

It’s well understood that experts in sociology consider the lawless nature of social networks as a main sources of increasing tensions among families and high divorce rate in the world. Take Iran for example, where there are 40 million Iranians who are members of at least one social network that is more than 50 % of the country’s population.

Now that the numerous threats and potential dangers imposed by social networks have become evident, it’s about time to define constructive functions for such media to be pursued; one must not be blind to the fact that the spread of social networks provides a vast ocean of opportunities before us.

Regardless of the inherent dangers and problems of the cyber space, we must attend to the functional usages of such media to promote cultural issues. It’s not wise to avoid the benefits of social networks just because they impose some threats or could be unethical. In doing so, the influential presence of institutions along with legal and real personalities who engage in cultural services prove the potential capacities that could be realized through achieving global gains in this domain. Although the cyberspace poses a lot of risks and threats to mankind, but the best defense is to manage and control the content in social media. The only solution would be to use this opportunity to serve our interest and objectives in a global sense.
